Kannada vs Tamil, English vs Hindi

Ever spoken in Kannada when asking for a film ticket in one of the theatres in Bangalore's M G Road area? If you have, you might have experienced what I did; a slight sense of embarrassment resulting in an immediate switch to English.
I think this is part of the Tamil vs Kannada, English vs Hindi syndrome in Bangalore, and it affects just about everyone.

You probably have felt something like this too; if you've lived in Bangalore for a while. You've probably either been the initiator, or have been at the receiving end of a sort of parochialism, like in the Oscar-winning film Crash.

Let me put down something before I proceed further - I'm a Bangalorean in the sense that I am a Kannadiga and grew up in the city until I left at the age of 21. That was about 6 years ago. I was your typical 'mannina maga', somewhat scared of asserting my roots when I was younger and have in the last 5 years or so, begun embracing Kannada.

Being Kannadiga

There is a simmering discontent among Kannadigas here; after all they are a marginalized lot in Bangalore. Some surveys peg the Kannadiga population at 31 percent in Bangalore. Add to this the fact that Bangalore is the capital of Karnataka or 'Kannada Nadu', and you see where the anger is coming from. Forum in Koramangala, Garuda Mall in Margrath Road or Bangalore Central near Mayo Hall are the preferred hang-out zones for many in the city these days. Walk down the aisles or up the escalators in these gleaming steel monsters and you will not hear much Kannada spoken.
I believe there are two major reasons for this: native Bangaloreans (Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, etc.) still prefer to shop in a Jayanagar 4th block or a Malleswaram 8th cross, so most people in malls are usually 'fresh of the boat' and almost always from the North of the Vindhyas. Two, Kannadigas still tend to speak in English in public. There is some sense of shame, embarrassment or some other emotion at work here.

Tamil vs Kannada

For most Bangaloreans this issue is, as they say, as old as the hills. Kannadigas and Tamilians have been fighting in public and have been friends in private for many a decade in 'nammooru'. I've had many friends, but for some quirky reasons, all my close friends in Bangalore have been Tamilians.
During the Cauvery riots in the early 90s we didn't have any issues. Yet, this is one struggle that I expect will go on for a while, because there appears to be historical reasons behind the divide. Janaki Nair's excellent piece Battles for Bangalore: Reterritorialising the City sums it up rather neatly:

"More striking were the linguistic and cultural distinctions between the zones, since the Cantonment had attracted a large number of camp followers from Tamil speaking areas of the neighbouring Madras Presidency. Consequently, the Kannada language's restricted presence in the city was only altered in two decades of somewhat spectacular demographic growth, the decade of 1941-1951 when the population grew by 100 per cent, and the decade of 1971-81 when the city grew by 76 per cent. The city drew more migrants from districts within the state after the 1950s, significantly altering the linguistic map of the city"

So Tamilians can claim to have as much a right on Bangalore as Kannadigas. It is true though, that many Tamilians prefer to speak in their native tongue, even while talking to Kannadigas.
Try asking for directions in Frazer town. But equally, Kannadigas lose no opportunity in clamouring for the city to 'swept clean of Tamils'.
I actually think the whole Tamil vs Kannada issue is not such a big deal. Some people (not all of them politicians) tend to manipulate the residents of Bangalore to suit their own purposes.

English vs Hindi

If there is one issue that unites all Bangaloreans, it is the sight of someone from the cow belt, clamouring for directions in Hindi, and expecting to be answered back in their tongue. I was once tempted into asking a couple of slightly rude teenagers on a bike to speak in English. These days, Hindi is spoken pretty much everywhere in Bangalore. The prevailing feeling here has been more elegantly paraphrased before, but let me interpret it rather plainly: 'just because Hindi is the national language, it doesn't give anyone the right to expect a South Indian or Bengali to speak Hindi in Bangalore.'

Make no mistake, I don't think anyone wants a polarized world. As for me, I certainly don't dislike Hindi; after all I work in Delhi and have picked up Hindi. And like many Bangaloreans I like good Tamil songs, would love to be able to speak Telugu and Malayalam. In an ideal world, I'd like us Bangaloreans to be as we once were as kids. My mum would watch Mukta or Moodala Mane on ETV Kannada with as much enthusiasm as Kasauti Zindagi Ki on Star Plus. And I would proudly tell my cousins from America that only in Bangalore would you find people speaking at least three tongues!

Dont ever forget that Tamil is your Grand Mother Tongue. Kannada is derived from Tamil, and if it were not for Tamilians, Bangalore would never have developed. It is a fact.

Hi "Selvan":
You have said the wrong thing in a wrong place. In any case, your assertion has no proof. That Kannada was derived from Tamil remains a mere claim by some people. It could not be proved as yet.
To those who "attack" Selvan: Selvan only repeats what he has heard. It would be better to answer him more logically by denying the claim quoting some work done in this field. It would also be good to claim some antiquity for Kannada, becaue it will help the Tamils in their Tamil Vs Sanskrit "fight".

Finally, I am a Tamil myself, and I have lived for a few years in Bangalore. Kannadigas (at that time at least) are very nice people. I do believe that Kannadigas are losing control over their city.
Kannada must be made compulsory to everyone coming to settle in Bangalore or Karnataka. If Hindi or English replaces Kannada, it will harm the Tamil language in Tamil Nadu. I encourage all Tamils in Bangalore to learn Kannada - believe me it is a sweet language. It is every Tamil's duty to protect Kannada. (Incidentally, it is also easy to learn if you know Tamil.)
Long live Kannada!

Both Kannada and Tamil originated from a common lineage , no question about that! However kannadigas should stop defining themselves only when provoked by Tamils. The real danger to Kannada is not from Tamil, they have coexisted for 3000 years, it is from the invasion of Hindi and English- culture. And the fact about Tamils in bengaluru- including hebbars etc is that while one group is isolated and for some reason provokes hatred from kannadigas, the other group mainly the iyers and iyengars pretends to be nonTamil and tries hard to dissociate from Tamil! In the process centuries old relationships are endangered. Kannadigas have to take pride in Kannada, not by hating some other language ,but by using more Kannada.

Kannada is in Danger of extinction. Tamil is spoken in many other countries. Kannadigas dont understand that the danger for their language is not with Tamil or Tamil people that is with the policy of the State Government and the people itsef. Kannadigas feel shy in speaking their language in public. You can see this in bangalore. They ebrace Hindi and English as superiors. They forget that Tamil and Kannada are same dravidian Language family. They associate themselvs with North indian culture. They are also dravidians. In Tamilnadu state board schools tamil is compulsory subject. That is not there in Karnataka.

All the human languages derived from a raw symbols.
Language and races are different, everybody knows their language since thier birth. If a Kannada mother adapted a tamilian child ,his mother tongue would be kannada.Olden days kings taken control over unique language in thier country. If we remove all the sankrit words in ll the dravidian languages, then the resulting words are the root for the dravidian langauges. The languages are used to spread the relegion such as buddism, jainism,Hinduism. The lipi used by the king for communication.
The kannada nadu and tamil nadu formed after Indepndence only.1000 years before the total population could have been 10 lacs(both tamilnadu and karnataka). The people used to migrate to the plains and delta regions like Krishna Go

I don’t care what the Kanadica talk bad about Tamil or Tamil talk bad about Kannadica, you are mealy a pathetic sole who are influenced by politicians drama. I am Tamil, Born and studied in Bangalore and working in Tamilnadu. For once I was proud to be Indian we own oldest languages, now it is struggling among these new born mushrooms, Fools instead of fighting why don’t you bring proofs of our languages (ancient) records which are dying in forest and old libraries, that way you save your culture and make proud of your language. Even if you have proof of your languages origin doesn’t mean that your language is mother to all, give them time to find theirs and respect their language. Friends, talking bad about other language only create conflict and hurt other members’ heart. Let me make it clear, these language fights are provoked by politicians for their benefits, don’t be a victim in their play. Sorry if I have made any grammatical errors.

Hello dear brothers, Kannadigas r best in hospitality as for i know. Iam a Tamilan. There may b some political issues... When i was in bangalore i never spoke in English rather i spoke in Kannada by learning. The Tamil population there speak kannada to kannadigas. More than that there is a significant kannadiga population in many districts of Tamilagam such as Coimbatore, Theni, Krishnagiri etc. They are also Tamil people, they contribute lot to the Tamil language.
Long live kannada... Jai Karnataka. jai hind..

Listen All Tamil Assholes. You are all here not for any love of the people or language in Karnataka. You bloody Slumdog Tamilianaires, read below to know where you come from:

Point is, you should know properly the Purans, history and the geographical history of the place before connecting. You are talking of linguistics and genetics of Tamils and Kannadigas matching? Well, over some 10000 years back, there was this continental drift that was happening when lands would cut off from mainland & would drift towards the other parts. In one such situation, a huge chunk of land cut off from Africa and started drifting and came and joined the southern part. This part is none other than WHOLE of Tamilnadu(Konganadu), 3/4 of Andhra Pradesh and half of Kerala. So along with it, came some people also drifting whose children you are. While so called Kannadigas, Maharashtrians and Goans were already the fairer belt and of the original mainland India who already were living here, but maybe they had a different language then. And so were the existing people like that of Northerners of today. You may also argue that North Indians came from the Central Asia, but the truth is Central Asia in those days was nothing but, Akhanda Bharata

So tell me, how are Tamils related to Kannadigas??? You bloody tamil slaves
